2nd Annual Suited For Success
This event will provide young males with the knowledge and tools necessary to navigate, perform, and ultimately succeed in professional environments. These integral skills will be conveyed through a Professional Panel that will discuss business etiquette and tips, a "tie exchange" (students will be given a free tie and taught how to tie it), and skits that will display proper and improper interviewing skills. All youth of Albany and Schenectady community are welcome--last year we had a great turnout and this time around we are looking to expand!
[5.19.14]
I Love Bad B*tches
The term B*tch has pervaded youth culture and has created complex implications for respect of self and of others--namely women. While its roots reach back some centuries ago, the term has recently been viewed as both a tool of empowerment (via the Feminist movement) and one with definitive pejorative meanings. Who may use it? Who may not? Within which contexts is it appropriate? Join the Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., and the Sisters of Omega Phi Beta Sorority Inc., to discuss the intersectionality of "Power & Pejorative"

Despite these many great achievements we are forced to ask ourselves, have we achieved the "Dream" Dr. King shared with us many years ago?

[5.15.13] Are MCGLOs Still Needed? 5:00pm Sorum House
Historically multicultural Greek organizations have been founded on principles of community uplift, cultural competency, and leadership. Persons of color have been marginalized for much of America's history, but with the election of an African American president and other notable strides, is this still an issue? Are MCGLO's still needed? Join us in our discussion surrounding the continued relevance of these Organizations.
[5.9.13] Phinding Love 6:00pm Breazzano House
Members of the community are given an opportunity to mingle with one another in this speed-dating-like event. Sharpen your skills and wit, for the two participants deemed the most impressive will be rewarded! Find friends, find fun, maybe even "Phind Love."
[5.3.13] Student Shadowing Day
25 students from Schenectady High will arrive at 9:00am and be paired with a Union Student with whom they will attend class(es) and eat lunch. As the culminating event of the day, we will hold a discussion (or Q/A if you will) facilitated by a select group of panelists. This event is being held with the intent of exposing local youth to higher education, and broadening their scope of vision to include the very real possibility of attending College. -"You can't be what you can't see."
[5.2.13] Real Talk
Gathering students and professors alike, we will engage in an open dialogue surrounding a myriad of controversial topics ranging from sexuality, inequities in education, politics, stereotypes, religion, etc. Many of these topics are far too often avoided in our daily discourse, and this lack of communication/understanding perpetuates the very issues we must overcome. Thank you Prof. Deidre Hill-Butler, Prof. Kenneth Aslakson, Prof. Melinda Lawson and Director of MCA Jason Benitez for joining us and engaging in this fruitful discussion!

[9.19.12]
Incoming first-year students have but little information at their disposal to accommodate their transition to college. Some may be unaware of the importance of academic excellence, the opportunity for terms abroad/internships, student organizations/clubs, or their immediate surroundings. We intend to provide them with a program that will serve as an introduction to things pertinent to their stay a Union. At the program, we will discuss the following: Academics, Internships & Study Abroads, Clubs/Orgs & Leadership, On & Off Campus Life, Shopping, Eats, Barbershops/Salons, and our must attend events of the term. This program will be supplemented by a chosen “panel” of 7 students who can share their personal knowledge and experience.
[6.1.12] Open House:
The Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha invite you to our first open house of the year. This is an opportunity for you all to meet the newest members of the PiPi Chapter and to learn about our history. Come one, come all.

Phenomenal Males was formed at Union College by a group of motivated males of color vested in fostering leadership while creating an atmosphere conducive to service, personal progress, and academic excellence. Our purpose is “To create a supportive network of students that aid one another in their personal, social and academic endeavors, while engaging the community through service, workshops, and events. In part, this will be done by collaborating with individuals and organizations that exhibit a passion for addressing similar matters.”
Phenomenal Males seeks to serve in a role-modeling, mentoring capacity for the Union and wider community. Within the few months of its existence, our goals have begun to take form and gain momentum. As per this organization, we hold weekly discussions that elevate the dialogue surrounding social justice, political participation, civic engagement, and our role as fortunate individuals. After these discussions, we allot time to devise networking, personal development and leadership workshops, as well as community service opportunities in which to partake. At the closing of our meeting we “check in” with the each other, giving an update on recent grades, course standings and provide the first-year students with advice on how to navigate through college life. Seeking out tutors for one another, lending textbooks, or simply offering a shoulder to lean on has given substance to this coalition of young men.
Phenomenal Males is an opportunity to raise the standard of scholarship and manhood, a space to reassess the term “success”, and a platform on which to centralize our efforts for the betterment of our campus and wider community .
